DIY Oil Lamp

With Earth Week upon us, I wanted to find some eco-friendly crafts to reuse my empty Basin Blend bottles. Since Basin Blend comes it glass bottles instead of plastic, like most seasoning blends, it’s so easy to get a second life out of each bottle. I thought about making a solar light or using them for bathroom storage. I wanted something a little less time intensive, so I made a decorative oil lamp out of things I had around the house. It only took about 10 minutes to make, and it looks amazing! Check out the instructions below for this DIY oil lamp.

Basin Blend oil candles

DIY Oil lamp. You’ll need the following:
Empty Basin Blend bottle
Flowers, leaves, stones, or other things to decorate the inside of the bottle
Floating wicks
Olive Oil, Clear Lamp Oil, or Citronella Oil

Fill your bottle with flowers, leaves, stones, or whatever decorations you like. I put passion-flower blooms and mint leaves in mine, but you can use anything you have around the house. Fill the bottle to the neck with water. If some of the flowers float, you can weigh them down with small stones. Add a small layer of oil on top of the water (remember oil floats!) and place the wick on top. Give it a few minutes to absorb the oil, then light!

The best part of this is, if the bottle ever got knocked over, the water inside would extinguish the flame right away, so it cuts out a lot of the fire risk. I put mine on the patio and I love the way it looks at night. I can see myself making a few more of these to get a full lamp effect on my patio, and maybe even make a few with citronella oil to repel mosquitos as well! The possibilities here are endless.

How have you reused empty Basin Blend bottles? Do you use them for storage? Made any cool DIY crafts with them? Let me know in the comments! And since it’s Earth Week, remember that Basin Blend is 100% recyclable. Recycling reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills and makes better use of our natural resources. Always reuse, reduce, and recycle!
